The funding  of 4,8 MSEK was granted for research and development of laminins to be used as tools in cell therapy. The funding is granted for two years starting from June 2009. Vinnova states in their approval decision that “BioLamina application is based on several years of world class research around human laminins which have the ability to fulfill a great unmet need to standardize human embryonic stem cell research and enable their clinical use.”

BioLamina’s recombinant laminins can solve several unmet needs within the stem cell field:

  1. BioLaminas matrix LN-511 supports unlimited embryonic stem cell growth in a pluripotent state – for more than 5 months without differentiation inhibitors
  2. BioLaminas matrices are the only defined cell matrix on the market - greatly increasing reliability of research results
  3. The matrix is a human recombinant protein which can be manufactured according to GMP – significantly lowering the regulatory burden to enter cell therapy clinical trials

The Vinnova grant allows BioLamina to characterize several other matrices and to create methods not only for unlimited stem cell growth, but also for creating differentiation pathways.

Commenting on the news, Kristian Tryggvason, CEO of BioLamina said “I am delighted that BioLamina’s innovative research was encouraged by Vinnova and that we can continue to create new products to help stem cell researchers get more reliable research results as well as to continue their search for cell therapy.”
